1. The people responsible for arranging
Dantes’ arrest were Baron Danglars, Fernand Mondego, and Gerard de Villefort. Baron, Dantes’ Junior Officer, was jealous of
Dantes’ position on the ship, and so plotted to have him imprisoned in order to
remove Dantes’ from his position. Fenand
wanted to marry Mercedes, and is jealous of Dantes, as he was about to marry
her instead. In order to prevent this, he arranged for Dantes’ to be imprisoned
so that he could take Marcedes as his wife while Dantes was in prison Finally,
Gerard imprisons Dantes’ in order to cover up the fact that the letter Dantes’
had was addressed to his father, who was a Bonapartist .
3. While in the prison, Dantes’ personality
changed rapidly as his mental condition degraded. Before he was imprisoned, he
was kind, naïve, and forgiving. In prison, his old personality disappears, and
he becomes hateful and vengeful. He spends his time planning how he should exact
his revenge on the three men who had him wrongly imprisoned. By the time he
escapes the prison; all traces of his old personality have been erased and
replaced by his new personality.
