1. I think Edmond hid his identity because if people found out that he has escaped prison then they will know that he is that man. The story would have been different because his enemies would have known who he was a they would try to kill him and prevent anything of happening to them.
2. In this quote tells us that Edmond realizes the wrong of trying to get revenge on Mercedes also because she called Dantes a noble man and thanks him. He regrets making the decision of plotting a plan of revenge and vengeance. This quote tells us that Edmond is also two faces and feels trapped at this point in his decisions and motives.
