First Impressions - Andy

Andy Choo
The Count of Monte Christo
First Impressions

My group initially chose this book by cycling through the Wikipedia pages of books that seemed interesting. Immediately after seeing the physical copy of the book, I was intimidated. The original book was a bit over one thousand pages, but we found a more manageable level copy of the book. The vocabulary of the novel is mostly from the older era of society, around the 1800s. It’s not so difficult to comprehend because I have experience through movies, other books, and video games. With the help of my group, we should be able to comprehend and really enjoy the book.

So far in the book, the main character, Edmond Dantes, came home after months at sea. The overall mood so far is happy, with Edmond being next in line to be the captain of the Pharoan, and soon to marry his beautiful fiancĂ©e, Mercedes. No action has taken place, but what to come seems very interesting. Three people are conspiring against Edmond for their own reasons. Danglers, a fellow shipmate, is jealous of Edmond becoming the future captain of the Pharoan. Caderousse is a close friend of Danglers and is aiding him with his goals. Lastly, Fernand is in love with Mercedes and disapproves of Edmond. I can already tell these three conspirers will play a big part into the main plot of the book.

The book is very interesting because I keep trying to predict what they will plan to do with Edmond. Will they kidnap him, frame him, or maybe even flat out murder him. This anticipation is really keeping this book interesting. I dislike the characters of Danglers, Caderousse, and Fernand because of their actions. Edmond seems like a really kind person that worked for his position and those three are just seeking to ruin his life. If Mercedes loves him, Fernand should just accept it and not conspire against Edmond. Overall, I’m liking the book and can’t wait to find out more about the plot.
